Christ the King (Year B) 25 November
Fr Frank writes:
Today, the last Sunday of the Church year, is marked by the observance of the Solemnity of Christ the King. On this special feast day, I invite you to contemplate Christ as King:
- We can begin by meditating on the readings selected for today. In the Gospel reading, when Pilate asks, “So you are king?” Jesus replies: “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I have come into the world.” The Book of Revelation (today’s second reading) announces, “He is the ruler of the kings on earth”. We discover that this is nothing new, the prophet Daniel, as with other prophets, had long foretold of the kingship of Jesus as we hear in our first reading. Our psalm truly proclaims: “The Lord is king, with majesty enrobed.”
- Arising from these readings we are drawn to the truth that Jesus’s kingship is not of this world. He existed from all eternity. And it was through him that the universe was created and, as such, all things belong to him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion.
- And that He rules not by power and authority, armies and weapons, but by merciful love and humble service, by patient suffering and sacrificial death, by benevolent compassion and unconditional forgiveness. The object of his rule of love is the human heart. His throne is the cross and his crown is made of thorns. The law of his kingdom is the law of love.We pray that we may be worthy of his kingdom, of his love.
- Christmas Gifts: The new CAFOD World Gifts catalogues hold a range of virtual gifts that make a real difference to communities around the world. Look out for the Catalogues at the back of church, and do consider using them as gifts for family and friends this Christmas.
- Anne and I shall be away on Saturday (1st) so there will be no Sacrament of Reconciliation that day. My apologies for any inconvenience this may cause, and my thanks to Fr Michael Rear who will celebrate the Vigil Mass at Frinton.
- May Christ our King fill you with his love.
